Slacker
I cannot believe I have been such a slacker! There is no excuse to not taking a few minutes and post comments. I now have a new full time position in a field I love! I work as the new Executive Officer for the La Crosse Area Builders Association. A non-profit. I think volunteering is the best and now I get to do it everyday and get paid to do it! I may not get rich from this job but I sure feel rich in the heart! I have volunteered for years with over 50 organizations or committees. Loved all of them...some were a lot of work and some were not. It doesn't matter...I encourage everyone to just volunteer. It does take a village to raise a child just like it takes volunteers to make a difference in the world. Please go out today and volunteer! If you need direction on where to volunteer, send me an email at suew@heramarketing.com and I Will send you a list! Or go check out your local Boys and Girls Club, hospital, park system, The American Heart Association, a local festival, your church! Go!

Spring Clean Your Marketing
Don't you just catch that spring cleaning fever about this time of year. You want to get rid of the old and bring in the fresh and new. Now is the time to do that with your marketing!
Did you ever notice that when you are redoing your marketing pieces you give them a fresh new look, but are still doing the same old tired pieces. Step out of your comfort zone and move your dollars. What does that mean? It means if you still have a stack of brochures, chances are that if you print new ones, in a year you will still have a stack. You are not using them so why do them again! Take those dollars and do a grassroots campaign, or upgrade your web site, or even buy a new media to your business. If you use traditional media try nontraditional ways such as Facebook or racing! I know, racing? Where did that come from. Many towns have local tracks or there are series that travel around the country. Talk about solid grass roots marketing. Go to the people! It used to be the only way to sell goods, now we expect everyone to come to us. Go where the people are and talk to them about what your business has to offer. You will more than likely be surprised at how it works. Who knows your product better than you! If racing or grass roots didn't work than why did brands like Tide, M & Ms, Nabisco, Coca Cola, Toyota stick with racing as long as they have. They don't sell to just men....awww...so women do go to races and we all know how brand loyal a race fan can be! They wear it proudly on everything!
So go spring clean your marketing and find your fresh approach!

Enjoy the Sun!
You know you live in Wisconsin when you are happy that it's been sunny for more than one day in a row! Today it is bright and sunny and the snow is starting it's slow melt into the earth. I watch each day was I see more of my yard and realize it won't be long before I can start making a difference in my yard by cleaning things up and planting new gardens or giving new life to the ones I have.
What a great way to look at your marketing. Look at it from afar, admire the good things you do to bring in customers and clean up the materials and places in your business that need a "spring cleaning". If your business materials are more than 3 years old, time to get new ones. Don't get caught up in the thought that "I paid for this so I have to use it until it's gone". If you are worried because you have invested in your materials...donate them to a school or Boys and Girls Club who can use them for art projects or in marketing classes. Recycle! It's good for mother earth!

Look At Your Business
It's Valentines Day! I hope ours is wonderful, mine is because the sun is shining and it's the day of the Great American Race, the Daytona 500! I am a huge race fan!
Today with the sun shining, it reminds me that spring will come to Wisconsin! When I see the sun I get inspired about all the things businesses can to do get ready for their customers. It should be like spring cleaning!
Today would be a good day to step outside of your business and look at it as it's the first time. What does a new customer see? Gum on the cement? Is the door dirty? Are their signs in the windows and are they faded? Did you forget to take down all the Christmas decoration? With the business environment like it is, you need to do everything you can to let your customers know you are open for business.
A day in business is like golf. In golf every time you hit the ball it's a whole new game. It could get better or worse. Business is the same, each day you have a chance to make your business better or worse. Make your day a better business day. Look at the simple things you can do to encourage customers to come. This is also true of your website. How many of you have items on your site that "I have to get to that or I have need to do an update". No time like the present. You will spend time going over your numbers for your business and trying to come up with a new "advertising plan"? Maybe today your time will be better served if you take a look and see if have your website, our materials and your place of business are up to date? Don't say you'll do it tomorrow because we all know something will come up. Make it a prioity and the more you do it the less work it will become. If you don't know how, hire a 3rd party to help. You do have control, now take it! Make it a better business day!

Ideas
Welcome!
I can't wait to share with you the ideas I have to help your business, your organization, your group, you friends...what ever you may need an idea for!
Let me start by telling you I have been in marketing, sales, promotions and advertising for about 25 years. I have had a blast over those years doing hundreds of events. They are my passion and I love trying to figure out how to make a Christmas party better, a sale go to another level or a new way to find a sponsorship opportunity.
So I thought I would start this blog so I had a place to put my ideas for both marketing small business(some ideas I am sure will work for big business, it just may take longer to get the wheels of the company to work) and a place to put my ideas.
Here is what happen the other day, I gentleman came into my office and he was talking about how his wife was turning 40 and he wasn't sure what to do. He tried to do a surprise for her for a past birthday and she did NOT appreciate it at all. He said in no uncertain terms......I will NOT surprise her ever again. By the way the surprise he did for his wife was a weekend away and he did it good...but she hated it! I said you have to do something for her 40th!
So here is what I came up with. Since he was less than 2 weeks to her birthday I suggested "10 days to 40" for 10 days to items that relate to 40.
40 love notes put in her pockets, purse, etc
40 M & Ms
40 pictures of his kids
40 flowers
40 pieces of candy with a note that says how sweet she is
$40 in cash
40 hours of husband labor
40 coins
A $40 donation in her name to her favorite charity
A certificate for 40 cups of coffee
40 flower petals
40 candles lit in the bathroom for a relaxing bath for her
40 flowers for her garden
40 stickers of smiley faces
40 movie tickets
$40 gift certificate for her favorite place to shop or eat
He liked that idea, then I said you need a big ending....what did she like. He mentioned she was a reader. I said what about a Kindle and 40 e-books. Bingo. he was hooked on the idea and I think he is excited about doing this special birthday for her and know he won't make her upset and still shows her how special she is to him. Go for it all you people who what to stand out and not make your spouse or special someone mad because you surprised them. I can't image being mad because someone cared enought to go to such lengths as to plan a party or weekend away!
So if you need an idea, send me a note and I will send you an answer.
